On August 17, 2024, a daylong workshop titled “Workshop with Cluster-Based Basic Trade Union Leaders on Technology Transition in the Apparel Sector of Bangladesh and Necessity of Just Transition” took place at CCDB Hope Foundation in Ashulia, Dhaka. The participants were from local level basic trade union leaders from Tongi and Gazipur of various Trade Union Federations. The event aimed to raise awareness among trade union leaders about the technological changes in the RMG and apparel sector and the need for a Just Transition.
BLF organized the workshop with support from Solidaridad Network Asia. The goal was to equip trade union leaders with the knowledge to advocate for a Just Transition as AI and technology rapidly transform the labour market. As AI becomes more common in the apparel industry, understanding Just Transition is crucial for trade union leaders. This knowledge will help them build strong advocacy and negotiation skills to protect workers’ rights during transition period. The workshop also provided trade union leaders with key insights into climate change and alternative skills.
This workshop will enable the trade union leaders to support workers in adapting to new technologies while ensuring sustainable and fair economic growth in the apparel sector of Bangladesh.
