World Environment Day 2026: Promoting a Greener Tannery Sector
On the occasion of World Environment Day 2026, Bangladesh Labour Foundation (BLF), in collaboration with the Tannery Workers’ Union (TWU) and SMEP project consortium partners, organized a discussion meeting and rally at the Savar Tannery Industrial Estate. The event brought together male and female workers from different factories, along with factory representatives and stakeholders, to promote collective action for a sustainable and environmentally responsible tannery sector.
Building a Sustainable Tannery Industry
The discussion focused on strengthening environmental practices in the tannery sector by highlighting the connection between environmental sustainability, occupational health, and workers’ safety. Participants emphasized the importance of responsible industrial practices to ensure a cleaner, safer, and greener workplace.

During the event, Abul Kalam Azad, President of the Tannery Workers’ Union, highlighted the importance of individual and community-level action in preventing pollution and protecting the environment.
The event concluded with a shared commitment from workers, union representatives, factory authorities, and partners to continue working together toward a cleaner, greener, and safer tannery sector in Bangladesh.
