Improving labour standards by eliminating child labour which leads Local RMG Industries to get recognition for a decent and violence free work environment
Overview
Bangladesh, a densely populated country where the garment industry is key to the overall economy. With the growth of export oriented RMG, the country’s biggest Local Garments sector has sprung up on the bank of the Buriganga river near the capital city of Dhaka. This factory meets 75 to 80 percent of the local demand. But, the local RMG factories are still running without any formal rules and regulations. In absence of formal rules and regulations, workers are being deprived from entitled institutional facilities like contract agreement, standard wage rate, regular working hours, identity card and leave with payment. Traditionally, local RMG factories in Keraniganj are overwhelming of Child Workers. This is because the change of status of socio-economic conditions of the family as they are suffering to maintain their basic livelihood needs. The overall condition of child labours is worse. Bangladesh Labour Foundation (BLF), with support of Mondiaal FNV is implementing this project in Keraniganj Dhaka aim to Improve the keraniganj local RMG situation.
Objectives
- Recognizing Local RMG as any form of industry under the proper authority of government.
- Strengthening Trade Union organizing, negotiation and collective bargaining to organize the workers and raise voice for the workers’ rights & welfare.
- Stopping new recruitment of Child Labour and remove existing child labour.
- Decreasing gender-based violence against women
- Improving OSH system and introducing decent workplace.
